Chapter 19

They’d never find him. He’d made sure of that. There was nothing linking him to the crimes. He’d traveled to just one of the festivals in his own name, one of a million visitors to the various scenes of crime. No one had any reason to suspect he had been there for anything other than entertainment purposes. And wasn’t that the truth? Taking the first four had been very entertaining, and his palms itched with the need to get on with the fifth. He’d never realized that it would be such a thrill, that it would be so addictive.

He found it amusing that he could walk among the unsuspecting masses, plotting, planning, and reliving his kills in full view of anyone who cared to delve deep inside his twisted mind. No one saw him. No one saw who he really was.

The next one was going to be fun. He’d almost wet himself laughing when Tendai had released her book. Too unrealistic, she’d written on his manuscript. What a joke. She’d thought it was so unrealistic that she had decided to steal the plot, so unrealistic that he was currently living out the fantasy—had been for the last four years—undetected. He’d show her just how unrealistic it was. Soon.

He’d always known he wouldn’t be able to keep the killings a secret forever, nor did he want to. The pattern became more obvious with every killing, made it more likely he’d be discovered, but that was part of the thrill. Even so, if he wished to continue with his efforts, he’d have to be more careful for now. He didn’t have time to focus too much on possible discovery. People went missing all the time. There had been no reason for someone to look into the cases so deeply as to attribute the cases to the same person until Tendai’s book came out. Yet again, she’d put a spanner in the works. Beautiful, sweet Tendai, who was currently ignorant as to what the world had in store for her. What a delicious little spanner she was.

Of course, someone could have connected the cases, irrespective of Tendai’s book. Maybe there was an international database of sorts. He’d heard of an algorithm someone had come up with to identify links between murders in different locations. He couldn’t quite remember, but he thought it was based in the US. Maybe it had been tested internationally. It was possible, he surmised. It was probably the names that would do it; he’d pushed the boundaries just a little too far, had been too self-indulgent, too smug. Still, they’d never catch him. He could have investigated the matter further, but his confidence levels in his abilities were so high, it was barely even on his radar.

It helped that he’d found his victims in different ways: ticket websites, online forums—hell, the first one had been a complete fluke. He hadn’t known her name until afterward when he’d opened her wallet and seen her ID. The coincidence had tickled him so much that he’d decided to continue with the theme.
